So, is Brett the killer? Would True Detective provide answers on such a big part of the mystery with five episodes to go - especially after putting the audience squarely on Brett's side? The guess here is no, but what do you think? until he returned to his house, dug into his shed, and pulled out a heavy bag that looked just about the same size as a dead kid. The audience sympathies were definitely firmly on Brett's side after that ugly sequence. Brett was first assaulted and abused by a group of good ol' boys, all of whom thought he had something to do with Will's death. ![]() This week, Brett didn't have much screentime, but what he did have was potent - thanks to some deft storytelling on the part of Nic Pizzolatto and director David Sackheim. Both are men of color who served in Vietnam and came back to an America that didn't support them or understand their plight, and both have seen enough ish to find themselves permanently scarred. But Brett has been a key supporting character thus far - and has served as a mirror image of Wayne ( Mahershala Ali). We don't know much about those two strangers, save the fact that the man is black and has a scar on his face, the woman is white and they were seen driving a brown sedan. But while how the Church connects with Will's death and Julie's disappearance will likely be explored in future episodes, "The Big Never" provided viewers with a few tangible suspects: an unknown man and woman who were seen around town just before the Purcells disappeared, and Brett Woodard ( Michael Greyeyes), the local junk guy. ![]()
